My priorities are rooted in a simple belief: Denver residents deserve a responsive, accountable government that listens and delivers. As Auditor, I will focus on transparency, community engagement, and identifying risks early to ensure better outcomes for everyone. Additional key priorities will include strengthening independent oversight, improving performance, and ensuring every tax dollar is spent wisely for the public good.
Independent, Ethical Leadership
Denver needs a qualified, independent, and ethical Auditor who puts facts over politics and integrity over pressure. Under my leadership, the office will remain free from political influence so it can serve as a true watchdog for the public. Keeping a professional and credentialed auditor in office ensures decisions are driven by facts, not politics.
My audit staff will analyze the effectiveness of city policies and initiatives but will remain independent from influence, as is required by the standards the office follows.
Effective Audits That Drive Real Change
Audits should lead to improvements, not just reports or news headlines. My office will focus on identifying risks early and helping city agencies correct problems before they become costly or harmful.
My office will provide non-audit services as allowed under audit standards to city agencies at their request. These services can include:
Providing advice, analysis, or recommendations on new policy or processes before they are implemented.
Educating city agencies on best practices, controls, or fraud prevention.
Facilitating risk assessments for city agencies to help catch problems early.
Increasing the implementation rate of audit recommendations ensures that findings translate into improvements residents can see and feel. We will do this by verifying recommendations are implemented at the time they are due rather than years later. This timely feedback will result in better results for Denver residents and stronger relationships.
Finally, we will leverage the office’s data analytics team to continuously monitor city data to identify issues proactively and early.
These approaches strengthen city operations, improve service delivery, and maximize the value of every audit conducted.
Community Voice, Transparency & Public Trust
Denver residents deserve an Auditor’s Office that listens and responds. Community members should help shape audit priorities so the office focuses on issues that matter most to them. My office will have a dedicated community liaison who will ensure residents, workers, and stakeholders always have a clear and reliable line of communication to me after I’m elected.
Additionally, the office will continue outreach to all Denver communities, will show up at events to support people and educate on our work, and will increase our presence in the public.
My office will continuously solicit feedback from you on what matters most and will incorporate your ideas into every annual audit plan.
Strong Fraud, Waste & Abuse Prevention
Protecting taxpayer dollars requires proactive action. And with the increased cases of fraud making headlines across the country, Denver needs to be ahead of the game.
Under my leadership, the office will establish a dedicated fraud, waste, and abuse investigation team that will allow the Auditor’s Office to independently identify misconduct early, investigate wrongdoing thoroughly, and prevent losses before they grow. This focused approach strengthens accountability, deters abuse, and ensures public funds are used for their intended purpose—serving the people of Denver.
We will also use the office’s data analytics team to monitor city data for high-risk areas to prevent identify potential fraud early, potentially saving the city from loss.
Fair, Trusted, and Accountable Denver Labor
Denver Labor must protect workers while also treating businesses fairly. Strong enforcement against wage theft is essential, alongside education that helps employers understand and comply with labor laws. And Denver Labor has grown significantly since its creation. My office will increase trust in Denver Labor’s processes through regular external audits of Denver Labor.
Support for Local Business
I will also create a small business diversion program for non-retaliation cases that will prioritize education, payment plans, and fine waivers before determinations are issued. This balanced approach protects workers, supports small businesses, and promotes voluntary compliance.
